Position Summary
Job Type: Full-time, permanent
Hours of Work: 8:30 – 4:30, Monday - Friday
Reporting to: Controller
Department: Finance
Reporting to the Controller, the Accountant plays a key role in month-end processes and many related accounting assignments. Strong technical skills, communication, and variance analysis skills are vital to this position, as is the ability to build a working knowledge of the Nation’s cost structure and processes.
Key Responsibilities
Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Tla’amin policies, standards, practices and procedures as directed by the Controller. Maintains confidentiality as required pertaining to members, clients, employees and general matters of the Nation.
- Prepares month-end journal entries
- Prepares and posts accounting entries for capital asset acquisitions, amortization, and disposals, and maintenance of the capital asset workbook
- Performs balance sheet reconciliations for the month-end close process
- Generates standard reporting package including preparation of monthly lead sheets, working papers, and financial reports and assist in fluctuation analysis
- Generates and distributes monthly Management reporting.
- Assists Management in their analysis on Monthly management reporting.
- Generates and supports the Controller and Senior Accountant in the preparation of the quarterly Finance Committee report.
- Assists in external audit requirements.
- Oversees the maintenance and integrity of accounting records.
- Ad hoc and statutory reporting.
- Participates in reviews, examinations, and testing of departmental systems and recommends changes to improve internal controls and efficiencies.
- Backup coverage for Senior Accountant and Project Accountant, as required.
- Adheres to all employer policies, rules, systems, and procedures including compliance with the Employer's Covid -19 Safety Policies and Protocols which may be amended from time to time.
- Ad hoc projects as assigned.
Qualifications
- University Degree and enrollment in CPA program.
- 1-3 years of progressive experience in finance/accounting. Experience working in and with Indigenous government is an asset.
- Advanced proficiency with accounting software from daily recording transactions and reconciliations to design and set-up of new corporations, chart of accounts and financial statements. Experience with Xyntax is an asset.
- Highly developed MS Office & Google Suite skills with extensive working knowledge of Excel & Google Sheets.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to share information with consistency and clarity.
- Ability to develop and implement policies and procedures.
- Acceptable Police Information Check.
- Valid B.C. Class 5 Driver’s License and acceptable driver’s abstract.
Working Conditions
Work is performed primarily in an office environment. Occasional travel to attend meetings or training is required.
