The Opportunity

Support the development of an evaluation framework and data collection strategy to track and monitor the Healthy City Strategy with a focus on root causes of crime. Research and identify evidence-based best practices and models of community development, including crime prevention initiatives and strategies that may be applicable to the local context. Support the development of a crime and violence prevention strategy for St. John’s with a focus on addressing the social determinants of crime.

Accountabilities

  • Undertake research and analysis incorporating primary and secondary research related to violence prevention / crime prevention including best practices and models that may be applicable to the local context
  • Compile and analyze local data and assist in community-wide gaps analysis.
  • Work with the Project Coordinator to identify partners in government, academia, community, business, neighbourhood associations, etc. to identify gaps and opportunities as they pertain to crime and violence prevention in St. John’s.
  • Prepare an evaluative report of research conducted to make evidence-based recommendations on initiatives and strategies addressing the social determinants of crime that are applicable to St. John’s.
  • Support the work of the Project Coordinator including development of a 3-year crime and violence prevention strategy and implementation plan, evaluation framework and data collection system, public awareness campaign and sustainability planning.

Qualifications

Education – Degree in: Public Health, Community Health, or a related field, specializing in research and impact evaluation.

Specific Skills/Certifications –
  • Strong working knowledge of statistical software programs such as SPSS
  • Works constructively in a collaborative network.
  • Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills
  • Knowledgeable in technical and analytical techniques to support planning and project implementation
  • critical thinking skills and ability to analyze qualitative and quantitative information from multiple sources and perspectives.
  • Proficient in computer software such as Word, Power Point and Excel

Relevant Experience –
  • Two (2) years’ experience in a role with similar duties and responsibilities with a primary focus on research and evaluation
  • Considerable experience in developing/implementing Impact Evaluation frameworks

Other –
  • Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Certificate of Conduct and Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license and access to a vehicle (Proof of Business Insurance will be required upon hiring).

  • Office environment that is centered within a working team.
  • Engagement sessions with various stakeholders
  • Dealing with members of the public at times.

Physical Requirements

  • Read and sit for an extended period.
  • May be required to sit, stand, or walk occasionally for an extended period of time
  • Normal physical effort is required day to day for movement around the workplace and other sites
  • Lifting and handling of equipment is required.
  • This position requires regular and accurate use of hand eye coordination
  • Must have finger dexterity/grasping ability to operate issued equipment/devices, or a computer.

Hours of Work

Monday - Friday
9:00 - 4:30 (33.75 hours per week/some evenings and weekends)
