Job Summary:

The Child Advocate provides psycho educational programming, support, education and advocacy for children under the PEACE Program who have witnessed or experienced abuse, neglect, anxiety, bullying, separation of family or divorce. Parenting support to the abused parent to support them in supporting their child or youth through the process of recovery.

Qualifications:

  • A good working knowledge of family violence, its impacts and of relevant community resources.
  • The ability to provide service in a respectful, empathetic and client-centered manner while maintaining appropriate personal and professional boundaries.
  • Compassion, empathy and patience
  • The ability to work independently and in a self-directing manner as well as the ability to work in a cooperative and collaborative manner with Society staff and other community agencies.
  • The ability to maintain necessary records and documentation, and to engage in the evaluation of the program and services.
  • A valid BC Driver’s License
  • satisfactory criminal record check and RCMP check
  • A diploma or bachelor’s degree in a related human/social service field
  • Two years of recent related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • CPR and First Aid required
  • Grade 12
  • Immunization records - First 2 COVID 19 vacinations
  • Standard First Aid & CPR ‘C’
  • Organization and time management skills

Duties.

  • Design, implement, evaluate and adapt psycho educational support groups and other programming for children who have witnessed abuse, their parents, and teachers.
  • Receive referrals of children to the program for individual physio-education programming and/or support group participation.
  • Conduct an intake process that includes assessment of the impacts of violence on the child, the group readiness of the child, the support needs of the parent who has experienced violence, and as far as possible, and the level of safety/risk to the child.
  • Conduct individual counseling sessions for children who are not ready to attend group and when no age appropriate support groups are available.

*Provide children with support and information, and assist them to identify, express and deal with the feelings they have experienced as a result of the violence

  • Make referrals to other agencies and services when appropriate.
  • Maintain related case notes, documents, forms and statistics, and provide reports to funders and supervisor as required.
  • Ensure play and meeting areas are maintained in a clean, organized condition. Arrange for, or provide, transportation to and from the program when necessary.
  • Arrange individual and/or group activities for children appropriate to their age and abilities, to encourage and foster development of self-confidence and self-esteem. This may include crafts, arts, outings, sports, special events and summer, or other seasonal activities or events.
  • Prepare and distribute information and/or presentations on the services available to children through the Society’s PEACE program, and on the issues of violence in the family and its impacts on children.
  • Familiarity with legislation, regulations, policies and best practices related to abuse and child protection.
  • Attend, and participate in, staff, and other, meetings as required.
  • Liaise with other service agencies, and professionals, to promote the program, and maintain current knowledge of issues and resources related to abuse and violence.
  • Attend, and participate in, training, certification programs.
  • Orient, and assign duties to new staff, volunteers and students as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as required
  • Maintains related records and statistics and provides reports to the supervisor.

  • Delivers case notes and reports that are clear, concise and include information and statistics necessary to serve clients and support the agency.
  • Ensures appropriate supervision and physical safety of children and caregivers and maintains clean and well-organized play and meeting areas.
  • Manages group and individual sessions in a calm, grounded manner, keeping participants on task and appropriately engaged.

OTHER:

  • This position can be divided between two employees (individual intervention and group programming)
  • This position can be combined with another Society position to create full time employment if the combination is not in conflict of interest for either position.
