Deputy Chief of Police - Waterloo Regional Police Services Job at Region of Waterloo
The Waterloo Regional Police Service is seeking two (2) Deputy Chiefs of Police who have demonstrated strong leadership, personal character and who has a desire to make a difference in a dynamic and growing community.
Established in 1973, the Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) provides community policing services to over 600,000 residents of the Waterloo Region. The seventh largest police Service in Ontario, WRPS has a 2021 budget of over $185 million and is comprised of over 1,000 members (785 sworn members and 381 civilian) dedicated to delivering effective policing services while embracing partnerships and community engagement that strengthen public safety and community wellbeing.
Reporting directly to the Chief of Police, and accountable to the Waterloo Regional Police Services Board and the Chief of Police, you will be responsible for establishing and maintaining excellent relationships within the community, ensuring ongoing trust and confidence, and safeguarding and operationalizing the vision and mission to all front-line staff facing the challenges of providing service to a large and diverse community.
As part of your role, you will:
Work collaboratively with the Executive Leadership team and all levels of the organization to support the goals, objectives and the Strategic Plan of the Service.
Work with community partners and government to ensure strong proactive collaboration on community issues and events.
Deliver on police operations such as ensuring the development of quantitative and qualitative performance indicators for police service delivery.
Manage the financial and human resources of the service including succession planning, effective deployment, and budget monitoring.
Represent the Chief, Board and Service at community and policing events.
Qualifications
Advanced knowledge of law enforcement, legislation, public safety policy, law enforcement management theory and administrative standards normally acquired through the attainment of a post-secondary degree in criminal justice, public administration or a related field plus progressively responsible law enforcement experience as a current or former Canadian police officer in the full range of policing programs including patrol, investigations and emergency response.
Knowledge and Abilities required to perform successfully in the role:
Progressively responsible senior management level experience in a multi-faceted law enforcement environment including experience with budgeting and financial practices, community relations and media management, change management, strategic management practices and current national and international policing trends, philosophies and best practices.
In depth understanding of the culture and values upheld within a police service in order to effectively communicate with and relate to its members.
Ability to adapt to and manage change and to foster an environment which is open to and prepared for change.
Ability to make strategic, operational and policy decisions which impact the long-term capabilities of the organization, the culture and the morale of staff, recognizing the political ramifications and public opinion.
Ability to produce favourable resolution of labour issues with the Associations and ability to handle conflict situations.
Advanced knowledge of governance structures in Ontario and in a two-tier municipal government system.
