MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:
To carry out electrical transformer design activities related to customer orders and customer quote requests assigned to the designer. Outputs from the position are delivering solutions and cost estimations in response to quotation inquiries, as well as delivering actual designs to various manufacturing facilities by creating MIPS’s (Manufacturing Information Packages). Accuracy, quantity of output, cost effectiveness of the product and timeliness are the key effectiveness areas.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Complete designs of both relatively simple and complex specifications, with minimal to no supervision, while also working directly with manufacturing groups to review and approve test data.
- The position focuses on the design of various transformer product groups, such as General Purpose, Drive/Rectifier Duty, and Control. These Products are also designed to serve various market segments, such as Mining, Solar, Energy & Data Storage, and Utility.
- Review and respond to any field issues for resolution and initiating suggestions for improvement in cost, quality and productivity.
- Good understanding of transformer design and manufacturing and testing
- Should be able to discuss with customers and vendors on technical requirements
- Effective communication within HPS to different functions
- Aptitude to learn & develop
- Team player – willingness to support co-workers, as well as openness to seek support when necessary
- Accountability
- Review quote, order & specifications, discussing any discrepancies/clarifications with Sales team. If required, review with customer on clarifications or discrepancies and any special application requirements. Provide estimate on total cost using available tools, data and resources.
- Review any special Application/Design requirements with Design Engineering Manager
- Prepare electrical design using internal design resources and software and submit design to mechanical design team for first stage of completion.
- Send approval drawings to customer, via internal Sales groups for approval (when required). Review customer comments or changes (if any) on approved drawings and coordinate necessary changes internally as necessary.
- Order any special material if required, and support Purchasing in finalizing specs of purchased special components with supplier
- Work in conjunction with Mechanical design team, to generate MIP (Manufacturing Information Package), and release to production.
- Understand the design guidelines in SPI and other related Engineering documents and implement them at a minimum total cost for product
- Implement changes through the HCN (Change Notice) process when applicable on a timely basis
- Review and approve test reports where required
- Request special tests where required to meet customer’s additional specifications
- Be able to solve problems/issues on the shop floor, and any electrical design field issues raised by the customer to a major extent on their own
- Work with the Manager on more complex issues for resolution
- Review shop defects reported and correct the designs and utilizes this feedback for preventing errors in the future
- Assists in projects for cost reduction
- Participation in quality improvement projects through MOS
- Design for special applications and spec.
- Training for new staff members when required
- Participation in Transform projects as required
- Communicate effectively with other departments and within the department
- Active participation in meetings
- Review personal work center daily for order of job completion
- May need to prioritize jobs in some instances, with input from manager
- Move operations in work center assigned to designer when completed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technologist.
- Minimum of three years of Transformer, Motor, or Generator design would be an asset
- Working towards/eligible to apply for Professional Engineering Designation

Salary: $65,000.00-$85,000.00 per year
