ROLE :
Working in conjunction with the Engineering Team, the Field Surveyor will be responsible for data collection and note taking, staking ditchline and grade cuts, managing of machine control equipment and drone flights. The Field Surveyor will be involved with the project from the start of scouting to the end of clean-up, capturing the necessary data for the construction and restoration of the pipeline and right of way.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES :
Field Surveyors usually work as a single person crew and are required to self-manage their duties for the day. :Primary instruction is provided by the Leader but may also be given directly in the field from time to time by Foreman and Superintendents.
    • Provide detailed topographic surveys with clear and concise notes for submittal to the office
    • Staking ditch centerlines and other features within client design drawings/files
    • Verify/confirm depths of cover, excavation depths, etc.
    • Layout designed excavations via cut stakes for mainline construction as well as bell holes for trenchless crossings and open cut crossings
    • Layout designed reclamation features (diversion berms, ditch plugs, subdrains, etc.) per client location specific designs and/or typical drawings
    • As-built surveys (civil surfaces, pipe/weld/mechanical details/features, etc.)
    • Facility pile layouts, marking cut off elevations, placing caps, etc.
    • Manage machine control equipment, loading files, checking and calibrating equipment, troubleshooting problems and the basic mechanical ability to perform small repairs (replace cables)
    • Gather pipe bending data in the field for transmittal to the office for evaluation and design
    • Check designed surfaces for accuracy before implementing for construction, having the ability to detect any errors that need to be corrected
    • Safe driving of a company truck on various surfaces including forestry logging roads and pipeline right of ways
    • Carry out drone missions for progress video updates and photogrammetry interpretation of the terrain
    • Establish and promote best practice in health, safety, and environmental matters in conjunction with the HSE department
    • Attend various on and off-site programs to enhance skills and knowledge for career development
Note: In addition to these duties personnel are required to carry out such other duties as may be reasonably required in order to support the objectives of the company.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS :
Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Geomatics or Civil preferred) or
    • Technological Graduate in Geomatics or Civil Engineering Tech
Experience
  • RTK GPS and Total Station experience
    • Civil Grading considered an asset
    • Machine Control experience an asset
    • Pipeline construction an asset
    • AutoCAD Civil 3D an asset
    • Drone experience with a Small Advanced License an asset
Skills and Knowledge
    • A valid driver’s license and can provide a clean driver’s abstract
    • Understanding of the oil and gas pipeline construction industry
    • Basic understanding of the concepts behind data management in a relational database
    • Ability to think analytically and solve problems
    • Strong written oral communication skills, having the ability to listen and ask questions to clarify understanding as necessary
    • High level of attention to detail
    • Strong problem-solving skills in a field environment
    • Appreciate the time, cost, and quality implications of the role
    • Ability to use own initiative, self-manage, and prioritize tasks each day
    • Ability to take direction, work in a team environment, and contribute to the success of the project
    • Capable of completing work to deadlines
    • Complete training and required valid safety tickets is a requirement prior to employment
    • Must be physically fit and able to walk on uneven terrain for sustained periods of time

WORKING CONDITIONS :
This position is project/field based and often works within remote project locations. Travel and/or living in temporary accommodations is required. Must be able to work 6 days on/1day off, 12-hour shifts for the duration of the project.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS :
The Field Surveyor has no supervisory duties.
