A thesis research position is available for a highly motivated Master's student in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Windsor to work on a new research project titled "Computational modelling and assessment of supersonic flow in centrifugal compressors for aviation air-conditioning systems."

This research project is a collaboration between Dr. Jeff Defoe at the University of Windsor and Dr. Matteo Pini at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands (TU Delft). The focus of the work is computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of flow through centrifugal compressors for aircraft environmental control (air-conditioning) systems. This requires that the working fluid in the compressor is a refrigerant gas. Such refrigerants have much more complex behaviour than gases like air and so detailed thermodynamic models of the fluid are needed within the framework of computational predictions of flow. In addition to predicting performance, this project also aims to identify the onset of flow instability (rotating stall). To computationally predict the onset of this phenomenon requires high-fidelity computations which are most efficiently run in parallel with a large number of computing cores. The open-source CFD package OpenFOAM is to be used in this project, but first a model for the behaviour of the refrigerant must be implemented into the code. Stall inception mechanism(s) will then be identified. The successful Master's applicant will carry out the core work for this project as their thesis research. The compressor design and fluid thermodynamic model will be provided by Dr. Pini’s group, and the successful applicant will carry out the implementation and simulations in OpenFOAM. Dr. Defoe’s research group at the University of Windsor has extensive experience with this code, including for turbomachinery applications, and so will provide training in its use and mentoring to the successful applicant.

Expected outcomes:

At least one international-level conference paper and a thesis are expected outputs from the successful candidate. In addition, at the end of the project, the successful applicant will be expected to travel to TU Delft for two weeks to carry out knowledge transfer activities. The ability to communicate effectively in English is therefore essential.

Placement of the position:

The position will be held within the Turbomachinery and Unsteady Flows Research Group within the Department of Mechanical, Automotive, and Materials Engineering at the University of Windsor, under the supervision of Associate Professor Dr. Jeff Defoe. The successful candidate will get training in research tools, approaches, presentations, and writing, and will get exposed to an academic research environment via interaction with Dr. Defoe and his team of Master's and doctoral students. A successful candidate will have:

  • An earned (or expected, prior to September 2023) undergraduate degree in Mechanical Aeronautical, or Aerospace Engineering
