Mechanical Engineer (New Grad) Job at Canadian Nuclear Laboratories
This position is for an entry level Mechanical Engineer to work with a team that designs, develops, procures and supplies specialty tooling and components for a variety of R&D projects for customers including decommissioning & waste management, other S&T groups at CNL, the CANDU Owners Group and commercial clients. The work is related to mechanical equipment and component development and may include the following:
- design, assembly and testing of specialty tooling and components;
- design, assembly and testing of research test rigs;
- experimental studies and analytical modeling in the areas of component and tooling development; and
- Management of medium and large sized projects.
DUTIES
- Work as part of a team designing moderately complex mechanical equipment, tooling and components to meet customer commitments;
- Complete engineering calculations to support and confirm the adequacy of detailed designs;
- Check formal engineering drawings to ensure they convey the engineering design intent;
- Prepare engineering documents such as Design Requirements, Design Descriptions, Work Activity Plans, Test Plans, Test Reports, etc.;
- Assist with laboratory testing and commissioning of newly designed equipment, including recording, analyzing and assessing test data and reporting results; and
- Managing medium and large sized projects.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s in Engineering or applied science from a university of recognized standing;
- Strong mechanical design aptitude;
- Knowledge of basic machine design practices, strength of materials and basic manufacturing techniques;
- Knowledge of technologies outside of traditional mechanical design would be an asset as would experience in robotic, automation and remote tooling;
- Knowledge of analytical modeling in solid mechanics;
- Knowledge and practical application of GD&T;
- The ability to develop new techniques and solve problems with minimal supervision;
- The ability to work as part of a team;
- The ability to make routine decisions as well as complex decision and recommendations;
- The ability to supervise technologists and/or junior professionals;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required. The candidate will be expected to prepare research proposals, author reports and deliver presentations. The ability to communicate and negotiate with external and internal customers and suppliers is an asset;
- The successful candidate will be expected to assist in managing projects, possibly as a contract officer, including preparing schedules, monitoring costs and executing the work;
- Eligibility for membership in Professional Engineers of Ontario
- General computer literacy in word processing and a high degree of expertise with spreadsheet software;
- A knowledge and awareness of radiation protection, environmental, QA and security compliance programs is an asset; and
- Knowledge of material science is desired.
