Nihdawin worker will support individuals facing significant risk of, episodic and chronic homelessness by placing them into appropriate housing based on their needs and affordability. Working to eliminate the barrier of being “housing ready” and build relationships with landlords and property management for quick housing placement.
The goals when working with community is to improve their quality of life through appropriate housing, and then work on their overarching barriers that lead to homelessness through case management, and referrals. The Nihdawin program works in improving self-sufficiency, reducing justice, legal, health, and emergency services, and additionally have in-housing addiction navigation to aid in promoting addiction recovery. We work on maintaining stability, community integration, and empower Indigenous people to reach their goals and remain housed
Position Responsibilities
- Strengthen connections to safe and affordable housing supports and additional services, as needed
- Advocate for individuals and families with landlords and on issues impacting their ability to secure housing
- Developing safety and transition plans, home visits and follow-up support
- Assisting with housing search and placement
- Provide necessary community supports through direct service or referrals and advocacy
- Play an active role across relevant community support services to advocate for the delivery of and access to, relevant trauma-informed supports for service users
- Conduct initial intake assessments and SPDAT assessments
- Support clients in the development of life skills
- Provide culturally relevant supports to maximize the capacity of women and their dependents to live free of violence.
- Assist and advocate for women and their dependents regarding their health, safety and well-being.
Employment Requirements:
- Completion of a college or university program in social work, counselling or other social science or health-related discipline is required.
- Relevant work experience in a social service environment as a volunteer or in a support capacity may replace formal education requirements.
- The nature of the position requires that the employee have a valid driver’s license and unlimited access to a vehicle.
- Knowledge of subsidized housing programs, networks and service providers in the NASC catchment area.
- Must provide C.P.I.C. records check.
- Will understand and value the mission, mandate and objective of Niijkiwendidaa Anishnaabekwewag Services Circle and Niijkiwendidaa Anishnaabekwewag Services Circle programs.

- Ability to solve problems for service users quickly, creatively and ethically.
- Knowledge of Indigenous Cultures.
- Knowledge of issues affecting Indigenous women, and Indigiqueer peoples.
- Cultural competency and ability to work in a cross-cultural context with communities and groups, including sensitivity to different cultural beliefs and practices.
- Ability to work as part of a team, demonstrating flexibility and efficiency.
- Ability to function independently and within established parameters.
- Ability to work effectively productively with limited supervision and under the stress of deadlines.
