We are seeking an innovative leader who shares our passion for Ontario's natural resources. The ideal candidate is self-motivated and able to strategically advance our programs. As the Regional Resources Information and Analysis Supervisor, you will lead the delivery of natural resources modeling, analysis, data management, application, and tool development in the Northwest Region. Additionally, you will provide expertise and advice to senior management and staff on natural resource analysis, standards, and best practices for resource data management.

The purpose of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) is to provide opportunities for natural resource development and outdoor recreation for the continuous economic and social benefit of the people of Ontario; and to administer, protect, and conserve public lands and waters. The ministry's programs focus on the use of natural resources such as land, water, trees, fish, animals and certain minerals for natural resource utilization and recreation.

What can I expect to do in this role?

Reporting to the Regional Services Manager, you will:

  • Supervise and lead the strategic planning and delivery of natural resources assessment, analysis, modeling and generation of complex GIS and other products in support of ecological sustainability and natural resources management and planning within Northwest region.
  • Lead and manage the acquisition, validation, development and maintenance of tabular and spatial data and databases from within the region and partners with outside agencies or other organizations (e.g. forest industry).
  • Lead the utilization, adaptation or development of analytical tools/models and the delivery of training to regional and district staff in data management standards, use of models/tools and GIS applications.
  • Provides direction and leadership for the delivery of projects that range from broad (regional scale) perspective to site specific in support of natural resource management planning activities and improving natural resource management practices (e.g. the development and implementation of various natural resource management plans and projects; wood and habitat supply modeling and analysis; the evaluation of wood supply scenarios developed by the forest industry and MNRF).
  • Lead and oversee the collection of information and analysis for emergency situations (e.g. fire and flood emergencies).
  • Lead the regional review and assessment of industry proposals to deploy new analytical tools and models and recommends the adoption and implementation of new analysis and modeling tools.
  • Liaise with regional managers/supervisors to facilitate the integration of regional information and geomatics programs to meet regional information.

  • You have demonstrated leadership skills to build effective teams by valuing diverse input and experiences to deliver results for natural resource management programs.
  • You can lead and manage change by nurturing working relationships with internal staff and external communities with varying views and opinions.
  • You have the ability to learn or have demonstrated experience applying human resources practices, policies, directives and collective agreements in relation to recruitment, training and development and labour relations.
  • You have the working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, regulations under the Act, other related legislation, and standards and management principles that apply to the work supervised or controlled is required for safe work practices.
  • You possess strong supervisory skills to assign/direct work of staff and determine priorities and expectations.
  • You have demonstrated the leadership behaviors, attributes and mindsets to lead the OPS into the future.


Analytical, Information Seeking, and Project Management Skills:

  • You have well developed analytical and evaluation skills to identify and address problems with tabular and spatial data validity, modeling assumptions and/or findings.
  • You have the proven skills to evaluate impacts of changes in land use planning/resource management policies/practices and GIS technology on the delivery of the regions information management programs.
  • You have the proven skills to review and assess industry proposals for adopting new analysis and modeling tools
  • You have excellent knowledge of project management principles, methodologies and practices to manage concurrent projects within the region that has provincial policy/program application and work under tight deadlines.
  • You possess sound judgment to determine project priorities, and anticipate, resolve and escalate issues to the senior manager as required.


Technical Knowledge and Skills:

  • You have advanced knowledge of current theory, principles and practices of natural resource management and ecosystem planning and development, relevant legislation and regulatory framework.
  • You have thorough knowledge of current and evolving science tools and approaches (e.g. landscape management, socio-economic analysis) to support natural resource management decision making and the balancing of ecological, economic and social needs.
  • You have the knowledge of natural resource management disciplines to provide direction for the design and production of required cartographic, graphical, statistical and modeling output.
  • You have the knowledge in the geomatics field, including most recent developments and applications; operating systems, networking, hardware and data security, backup and retrieval issues; with good understanding of complex GIS, graphics and statistical software and database management.
  • You possess the ability to plan and manage the infrastructure of hardware, software and provincial digital database sets for the production of cartographic and graphical output in support of resource analysis.
  • You have the knowledge of OPS information/data management policies, standards, architecture and infrastructures, including the application of Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, for protection, security and release of data/information in accordance with OPS policies.


Communication and Stakeholder Management Skills:

  • You have demonstrated collaboration skills to develop linkages with key networks and stakeholders for various land/nature resource management planning initiatives.
  • You have proven negotiation and facilitation skills to serve as a liaison and to balance diverse interests in support of ministry programs.
  • You have well developed communication skills to provide recommendations, expert advice, prepare reports, briefing/background notes and responses to various correspondence.
  • You are proficient in using various software for word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations.
