Registered Practical Nurse

Function: Provides client-centred nursing care to Bethany Lodge residents in accordance with administrative policies, physicians’ orders, established standards, CNO and MOH and recognized nursing principles.

Qualifications:

1. Current Certificate of Competence with the College of Nurses of Ontario

2. Medication Certification (required)

3. Experience in geriatric and/or Long Term Care nursing required or completion of a course in geriatric nursing

4. Leadership skills, self-directed, self-motivated, autonomous

5. Skilled problem solver

6. Knowledge of the aging process

7. Computer skills: Word, Excel, Outlook, has or is willing to learn Mede-care

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include but are not limited to medication administration, health assessment and intervention, providing required treatments, andinitiating, implementing and updating the residents plan of care.

Resident Care

  • Meet the residents’ care needs and requests for assistance promptly in a courteous and respectful manor that reflects Bethany Lodge’s caring and Resident Centered Philosophy.
  • Assess resident’s condition through recognizing and interpreting symptoms and signs and where appropriate instituting nursing intervention.
  • Is responsible for the care of the acutely ill residents;
  • Assists the physician in diagnostic and therapeutic measures; contacts the physician regarding the resident’s condition, receive, transcribe and implement the physicians orders if outside of normal business hours.
  • Responsible for the safekeeping of drugs and narcotics keys
  • Some health teaching to residents regarding their condition or prevention of injury. Assist in teaching residents good practices for healthy living.
  • Promote good working relationships, ensuring a multidisciplinary team approach. Supervises PSW’s on the unit.
  • Deals tactfully and courteously with residents, families and visitors

Administration:

Implement and adhere to Bethany Lodge’s procedures and practices of resident care in an effective manor according to Bethany Lodge’s Resident Centered Care philosophy and the Resident’s Bill of Rights. It is your responsibility to make yourself aware of policies and the Resident’s Bill of Rights. You will have orientation, and in-services regarding new policies or policy changes. Lack of knowledge about a policy is no excuse for non- adherence and discipline will result.

Notify Supervisor in well in advance of your shift (at the very least according to the time frame outlined in the collective agreement) if you are going to be absent and alert the supervisor if you have symptoms which could be contagious.

Actively participate in Resident Care Conferences and contribute to the Nursing Care Plan by documenting any changes required to the plan.

You are responsible for knowing and implementing all the care requirements of the residents by listening to report, being familiar with the Nursing Care Plan. Ignorance of the residents care needs is no excuse for providing less than optimal care and inadequate performance of individualized resident care will result in discipline.

Actively participate in Quality Assurance Activities including audits, inspections, meetings etc.

Follow documentation standards of Bethany Lodge, the Ministry of Health and the College of Nurses accurately and completely.

Be a constant advocate for the residents at Bethany Lodge ensuring that their physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs and wishes are being met safely and that all care is provided within the resident care philosophy and according to the Resident’s Bill of Rights. Any time you witness or suspect resident abuse of any kind you are legally, morally and ethically required to report this or you may be implicated in the abuse.

  • Bachelor's Degree (preferred)
