About the opportunity:

The Research Scientist I executes experiments in the development of new products and/or renovation projects under supervision and guidance from the Research Manager or Supervisor. Laboratory experimentation in the technical areas analytical services to support process and product development, process implementation, cost reduction initiatives, and manufacturing technical services.

The attributes we are looking for:

• Participate in the planning and execution of routine laboratory analyses in the development of new products and/or product renovations by providing input for the experimental plan and conducting experiments, producing documentation, and interpreting results.
• Conduct laboratory tests using standard laboratory instrumentation to provide results and formulates preliminary conclusions for finalization by the Research Supervisor and/or Manager.
• Support method development in the introduction of new laboratory equipment / methods/ tests / procedures to support innovation and/or improve quality standards.
• Coordinate the analyses by assessing the requirements to complete the tests to meet the identified deadline dates.
• Communicate experimental results to internal Research Scientists to support the technical investigation.
• Consult technical resources (literature, technical papers, and academia) to gain knowledge and implement learnings to identify issues and or further develop new methodologies.
• Provide routine maintenance and trouble-shooting of laboratory equipment to ensure operational efficiency and test accuracy.
• Responsible to ensure Quality is fundamental in execution of all work activities and work in compliance to Quality Systems Lactalis Canada (e.g. QSL).

What you will bring:

• University degree in Food Science, Microbiology, Chemistry, or related discipline
• One (1) to two (2) years work or related experience
• Basic knowledge of dairy products and their functionality
• Creative problem solving skills to develop and perform bench-top experiments to achieve the solution
• Ability to produce accurate documents of experiments in support of Company standards and SR&ED tax credits
• Strong written and interpersonal/communication skills with internal and external sources for technical information and ingredient assistance
• Ability to organize and report results using a variety of computer applications (Lotus Notes and office 365)
• Ability to effectively handle multiple projects and the assignments of priorities within the defined project area
• Basic knowledge of food and government regulations related to the dairy industry and labeling
