Description :
The Montréal West Island IUHSSC is currently looking for social workers to fill various full-time permanent positions in the Evaluation and Orientation Service of the Batshaw Youth and Family Centres in Westmount.

Do you care about children in need and want to contribute to a noble cause? This job is for you!

At the Batshaw Centres, you will work to ensure the safety of English-speaking children from different identity communities who are affected by neglect, rejection and physical, sexual and/or psychological abuse. These children may also be disadvantaged by behavioral, mental or physical health problems, or difficult socio-economic conditions. Employment at Batshaw Centres promises to be a touching, challenging and rewarding experience.

The Evauation and Orientation (EO) Service

After an initial summary analysis, almost half of all child protection referrals are transferred to the Evaluation and Orientation Service (EO) for further investigation. If the child's safety and/or development are considered to be compromised, this service implements protective measures (with the parents' consent or as part of a court order) and initiates an intervention plan.

In this clinical-legal environment, you will need to know, interpret and apply the legal, regulatory and normative provisions of youth protection. You will use your clinical judgment and advanced knowledge of developmental, attachment and bereavement theories to guide your interventions. You will be supported by clinical specialists, managers, independent experts (e.g. physicians), lawyers, colleagues from different disciplines and an expert system.

As part of your duties, you will be required to:

  • Gather information regarding reports through file review, field visits, interviews with the reporter, child, family, outreach workers, etc;
  • Analyze the problematic situation for the child (nature of the harm, severity, impact, foreseeable impact on his/her life trajectory, etc.);
  • Analyze the family system, particularly the level of concordance between the family's functioning and resources versus the child's needs;
  • Determine whether the child's situation is compromising in terms of safety or development, and assess the degree of risk to which the child is exposed;
  • Evaluate the parents' capacity and encourage them to put in place protective measures that will put an end to the problematic situation;
  • Participate in the identification of an alternative solution when a child cannot be maintained in his or her environment (e.g. placement in foster care, in a group home, with a significant third party, etc.);
  • Write reports, provide professional advice and recommendations;
  • Enter all relevant information into the child's computerized file;
  • Connecting parents with internal and external resources when families have psychosocial needs that do not compromise the child's safety.

By taking advantage of this great professional opportunity, you will enjoy many benefits :

  • A very dynamic work environment;
  • The stability offered by permanent employment within the health and social services network;
  • Extensive internal professional development opportunities;
  • Competitive salary (from $27.08 to $47.98/hour, depending on experience) to which bonuses may be added;
  • Ongoing training offered during the first 3 to 6 months;
  • Access to a variety of professionals for coaching and support;
  • Four (4) weeks of vacation, thirteen (13) statutory vacations and 9.6 sick days for one year of full time work;
  • Participation, with the employer, in a defined benefit pension plan ensuring a reliable retirement income;
  • Group insurance coverage (drug, dental, salary, etc.);
  • Access for you and your family to a free employee assistance program;
  • A teaching and research environment through affiliation with McGill University and the Knowledge Transfer Service of the Academic Affairs, Teaching and Research Branch.
Requirements :
The desired candidate:

  • Holds a bachelor's or master's degree in social work or social service work;
  • Is registered as a social worker on the Quebec Order of Social Workers and Marriage and Family Therapists;
  • Is able to assess a person within the framework of a decision of the Director of Youth Protection or the court under the Youth Protection Act (3.6.5);
  • Is able to determine the intervention plan for a person with a mental disorder or at risk of suicide (3.6.7);
  • Is able to establish a therapeutic relationship with a Francophone and Anglophone clientele;
  • Has a valid driver's license and a car (mileage reimbursed);
  • Has experience in evaluating referrals at the YPD (an asset);
  • Is available full time during the day and is willing to work outside of regular hours when an emergency requires it.

Desired skills :

  • Possess skills in psychosocial assessment and crisis intervention;
  • In-depth knowledge of child development and theories of attachment, separation and loss;
  • Demonstrated skills in providing services to a multicultural and multiracial community;
  • Have a general knowledge of the Youth Protection Act and the Act respecting health services and social services;
  • Have a good knowledge of community resources and the health and social services network;
  • Be able to work at a fast pace to meet the deadlines of the YPA and deal with various urgent situations.
