The Vancouver Island Real Estate Board (VIREB) has an amazing opportunity for a permanent full-time
Software Developer to join our Technology Services Team. This can be a fully remote work role and the team is in the North American Pacific time zone. VIREB’s Technology Services Team provides technology support for software solutions together with development services for new products.

A role you will love

As a Software Developer, you will design, develop, and improve our applications software, including research, prototyping, design, development, quality control, and continuous improvement.

Your creations will be primarily used by internal staff and by our members, and occasionally by the public.

Other Key responsibilities include:

● With a main focus on web-based, cloud-hosted applications, you will code, test, and deploy a variety of business applications and services for varied and interesting business use cases.

● You will design in quality and robustness, ensuring compliance with applicable standards and guidelines, and will participate in reviews and peer reviews to make sure your code meets or exceeds these standards.

● You will document your work for others to understand, reuse and improve on it.
● You will improve existing processes and create additional ones to improve quality and efficiency.
● You will assist in the troubleshooting of applications in both production and non-production environments.

What will you bring to the role?

Required:

● A bachelor’s degree in computer science or a STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) field with a strong command of important core programming and computer science concepts

● Fundamental knowledge of core web principals (HTTP, browsers, SSL, web servers)
● Good understanding and experience in HTML/CSS/JavaScript
● Ability to plan, design, write, modify, integrate, and test web-site related code with adherence to security and quality controls
● A strong understanding of how web-based applications work with some experience in both the front-end and back-end
● Proficiency with relational databases and associated tools to retrieve, insert, update, and delete data

Preferred:

● Fluency with the development of web applications using responsive layout
● Experience in creating and optimizing content for websites using a variety of graphics, database, animation and other software
● Deeper experience with SQL stored procedures and DDL, constraints, data design, etc.

Bonus:

● Experience with cloud-based development and deployment (any public cloud, although we mainly use AWS EC2)

● Experience with LINUX
● Experience with modern Microsoft PowerShell scripting
● Experience with Data Visualization software like Tableau or Microsoft BI

We’re looking for someone who can:

● Assist in the collection and documentation of user requirements that will be used to develop, document, and organize information for the appearance, layout and flow of VIREB’s websites and other software solutions

● Prepare mock-ups and storyboards
● Contribute to the team dynamic by promoting a culture of collaboration culture across the organization
● Use communication skills to explain the project design in a way that other team members understand
● Energize and motivate other team members to build positive morale
● Think critically and use high level abstract thinking to solve complex problems that will form practical solutions (a genuine love of problem solving)

● VIREB has a vision to deliver innovative software solutions for use by its members and staff.
You’ll be challenged to define the tools that will be used by a team of developers to build end-to-end features from scratch that integrate with VIREB’s systems

● Squashing bugs as they come up because you can’t stand messy software
● Developing website architecture and recommending hardware and software requirements
● Collaborating closely with others to bring features to life and iterate on them based on feedback
● Diving into learning new technologies and solving the unique problems that come from integrating with 3rd-party systems

Where You'll Work

● VIREB has adopted a remote-first workplace for its Software Development Team because we recognize the advantages of working flexibly. VIREB’s office is located in beautiful Nanaimo,
British Columbia, which means that software developers are able to live and work within British
Columbia and work within regular business hours in the Pacific time zone.

● Software Developers have the option to work in the Nanaimo office or from home, whatever works best for you!

● You’ll be set up to work remotely with a Windows-based PC, two monitors, desk, chair, a monthly phone and Internet allowance.

● You’ll collaborate with your team virtually (we’re just a Zoom call away!) and have established focus time during the workday to enable us to work smarter together.
