The Opportunity:

The Technical Writer will be responsible for the development and maintenance of consumer technical publications, including best-in-class owner’s and assembly manuals, product marketing bulletins, product feature copy, and all other consumer-facing technical content.

The Technical Writer will work closely with the Product Development, Product Marketing and Customer Experience teams to ensure consumer-friendly, well-thought-out, and easy to understand documents are being shared with our customers. They will strive to continuously improve our publications through monitoring of user feedback and relevant competitive analysis and will ensure all internal and external parties are made aware of any changes to our product or accessory lineups throughout the product lifecycle.

Your Top Priorities:

  • Creates, updates, and refreshes all Norwood and Frontier product manuals
  • Assembles and uses products, in order to gain a better understanding of the process, and then uses that experience to design assembly and operational instructions
  • Assists the Product Marketing team in the creation of product marketing bulletins, features/benefits content, short and long-form descriptions, and various other technical consumer publications
  • Translates technical knowledge into easy to read, consumer-friendly language
  • Gathers feedback from online forums, customer comments and other customer interactions to understand common difficulties and make continuous improvements to technical publications and manuals
  • Reviews and actions customer and internal edits throughout the ever-evolving life cycle of the technical publication
  • Utilizes Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop), in collaboration with the Graphic Designer, to design and develop manuals and consumer documents, including relevant photos/illustrations
  • Understands personas use and correct voice when adapting communications to various audiences, platforms, and situation
  • Keeps relevant parties, both internal and external, aware of changes to products, including new, updated and discontinued products and accessories
  • Conduct regular competitive analysis and scanning to ensure we are maintaining our spot as a global leader
  • Learn all operational and technical aspects of Norwood equipment and competing equipment
  • Assist with customer inquiries as they relate to the assembly and operational instructions
  • Other duties that may be assigned as required

What it Takes to Succeed:

  • 3-5 years experience in a similar role
  • Post-secondary education in technical writing or mechanical design/engineering an asset
  • Mechanical aptitude and comfortable working closely with tools and heavy equipment
  • Expert written communication skills, with good working knowledge of spelling/grammar
  • Excellent Microsoft Office skills
  • Basic knowledge and experience in Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop)
  • Basic experience using Solidworks or other CAD software, an asset
  • Keen understanding of how to use photos and short form copy to represent the assembly and use of our products in a way that is simple for our customers to interpret
  • Comfortable working with technical terminology
  • Basic DLR photography experience, an asset
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Experience working with consumer goods within a manufacturing/fabrication environment, or working with heavy equipment or forest/farming equipment would be an asset
  • Passion for sawmilling or wood-processing, an asset
  • Must be available to work in the office
