The Ministry of Forests is responsible for stewardship of the province’s Crown land and natural resources. Overseeing a land base of 94.8 million hectares, the ministry delivers services to provide environmental, economic, cultural, and social benefits for all British Columbians.

Reporting to the Program Manager, the Coast Check Scaler contributes to ensuring Crown forests harvested are accurately scaled, assessed for stumpage, and revenue collected according to the Forest Act, Forest and Range Practices Act and provincial policy and guidelines. The Coast Check Scaler conducts check scales of previously scaled timber, inspects timber scaling and transportation operations, initiates remedial actions to correct inadequacies identified through check scales and inspections, takes direct enforcement action where violations occur, assists in the performance of administrative duties, assists in maintaining scaling standards and performs other duties.

This position is based out of Port McNeill, which has some of the most affordable housing on Vancouver Island. Job Requirements:
In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education and experience as outlined below:
  • Secondary School graduation or equivalent.
  • A combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
  • Valid Coast Scaler licence with required endorsements.
  • Valid Class 5 BC driver’s licence.
  • Minimum of 3 years of related operational Coastal scaling experience.
Willingness Statements:
  • Required to perform check scales and inspections outside of regular work hours.
  • Successful completion of Basic Law training within 6 months of appointment as a Forest Officer & Forest Official.
