Reporting to the Director, Special Projects, the Estimator will be responsible for the preconstruction cost management of Lump Sum/Hard Bid projects. During preconstruction, the Estimator will work closely with the owner, design consultant and Project Manager to prepare cost plans, undertake value engineering, complete cost saving exercises and develop the project budget. This role will continue through the tendering sub-trade work ensuring that all aspects are effectively coordinated, meet the project specifications and are under or at budget.
This position is based in the Mississauga, ON office.
Responsibilities
- Assemble accurate, timely and well-organized estimates, including hard-bid, construction management and design-build.
- Provide accurate, timely preparation of full-cost estimates for projects, including materials and labour.
- Supervise the solicitation of trades regarding bid invitations, pricing, addenda, and tender/bid closings.
- Supervise and perform quantity take-offs for all areas of the estimate while ensuring the take-off is well notated for hand-over to the project team and includes safety and security requirements required by Stuart Olson policies and applicable legislation.
- Organize sub-contractor quotes when the bid is successful, re-writing binders and assisting the buy-out process.
- Monitor the success of a project, noting potential challenges and building relationships with sub-trades for future opportunities.
- Distribute sub-trade quotes to personnel, flagging areas of concern and coordinating with management to accommodate risk within the bid price.
- Maintain databases, including labour rates, material pricing and project costs, for future reference.
- Implement and maintain systems and procedures in relation to estimating.
- Prepare conceptual estimates by interpreting historical data.
- Participate in project close out report.
What we are looking for
- 5+ years’ related estimating experience, preferably with Lump Sum projects up to 15 million dollars
- Knowledge of modern construction practices, techniques and equipment
- Knowledge of construction costs and budgets, ability to develop a project schedule
- Experience working with estimating software programs
- Strong mathematical and analytical skills for development of material and labour estimates
- Strong mathematical and analytical skills for interpretation of job-cost reports
- Proficiency with cost-estimating software to prepare cost quotes and bids
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook and Adobe
- Demonstrate integrity and strives for excellence in the quality of work
- Ability to communicate with project team, subtrades, consultants and owner; understand the issues and be an active participant in the preconstruction process
- Experience working with estimating software programs
- Ability to forge, grow and maintain positive relationships
- Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously and meet the time demands of unpredictable activities; capable of handling pressure and challenges in a dynamic business environment
- Ability to work within tight deadlines and prioritization of work to achieve them
- Strong analytical, critical thinking, troubleshooting, problem-solving skills, strong math skills and a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
- Highly developed interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
- Demonstrates a sense of urgency and strong commitment to achieving goals; ability to work in challenging, fast paced environment
- Ability to work collaboratively with a positive attitude
