Contributes to the overall success of the Legal Department in Montreal, Quebec ensuring specific individual goals, plans, initiatives are executed / delivered in support of the Department’s objectives. Ensures all activities conducted are in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures. Responds to a wide variety of legal and banking issues.



Accountabilities:


  • Champions a customer focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.
  • The incumbent will provide timely and accurate legal responses to: Retail Branches in Quebec, Shared Services, Office of the President, the Estates Department and other Bank departments to resolve customer issues and disputes. The incumbent will also be expected to correspond with relevant Government departments and outside stakeholders including other financial institutions and lawyers. Also in time, handles retail-related requests on a mostly autonomous basis. The expectation is that all issues from these areas, or any matters that may present an extraordinary element of legal, financial or reputational risk, due to their unusual nature or complexity, will be promptly escalated to the Senior Legal Counsel.
  • Assists the Senior Counsel and the Bank’s Litigation Defence Team in the management of small claims litigation matters and interacts with external counsel for this purpose. Handles other legal documentation and file maintenance-related tasks.
  • Shows a high degree of attention to detail and care in the review and drafting of documents, emails, etc.
  • Considers the Bank’s risk appetite and culture in day-to-day activities and decisions; actively pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas, while ensuring adherence to the Bank’s policies, procedures and controls with respect to operational risk, regulatory compliance risk, AML/ATF risk and reputational risk (including the Bank’s Code of Ethics and related policies).


Education and Experience:


  • The incumbent must have at least five years related experience preferably from a large law firm or other financial institution.
  • D.D.N. preferred
  • It is essential that the incumbent be fluent in both French and English (spoken and written) and communicate effectively and correctly in both languages
  • The incumbent must display keen judgment in balancing different elements when issues arise, including the Bank’s interests, reputational risk and the customers’ concerns.
  • Bank, trust or insurance industry experience a key asset
  • Knowledge or experience in the wills and estates area a key asset
  • The incumbent must be able to work with a large volume of enquiries and be able to prioritize those issues.
  • The incumbent must be self-motivated and work with only moderate direction


The successful candidate will be required to be able to communicate in English in addition to French because they will be required to work closely with other groups from head office who operate primarily in English, they will report to a manager from head office who is an English speaker, and they will serve English-speaking clientele.
