As a Business Development team member, this individual will lead the Private Donor market segment focused primarily on raising funding from foundations, high net-worth individuals, and corporations. As needed, this person will also support grant acquisition efforts across other market segments, such as institutional donors (like GAC, USAID, etc.), especially when public and private funding opportunities converge.

The primary responsibility will be to identify private funding opportunities, lead the cultivation of prospective donors, develop grant proposals, and close donor funding agreements. The secondary responsibility will be to help expand the organizational capabilities for private fundraising.

This position is ideally located within Ottawa but can technically be located anywhere in the Province of Ontario, perhaps all of Canada.

Responsibilities:

· Identify and cultivate new targets: you will use your network and build upon an existing database of potential targets, primarily for large foundations and smaller family foundations and

test the market for high-net-worth individuals and corporations. You will update the prospect management database with relevant information related to donor strategies, contacts, and results.

· Fundraising resources: you will use existing and prepare new fundraising materials such as briefing notes, case statements, presentations, and developing grant proposals.

· Get ‘in the door’ and make pitches: you will be determined in your pursuit of ‘getting in the door’ with potential donors who have interest in public health and nutrition.

· Write concept notes and proposals: you will be the ‘lead pen’ on drafting concept notes and proposals and facilitate proposal workshops with technical and country staff as needed. You will also support the closing of donor funding agreements, before handing over the project management responsibilities to the Operations team.

· Steward existing donors: you will maintain contact with the existing and growing base of private donors to maximize the opportunities for future continued funding. You will develop donor recognition and renewal programs and ensure accurate, timely implementation to recognize donors appropriately.

· Evolve the private donors’ system: you will build on the existing system for identifying, cultivating, asking, and stewarding private donors; document all donor moves, continuously updating the prospect management database with relevant information related to donor strategies, contacts, and results.

· Goal setting: you will work with Business Development leadership to define goals, objectives, and metrics for the Business Development team and develop annual plans, strategies, and budgets for the Private Donors portfolio.

· Pipeline development: you will help develop and maintain a clear pipeline with a view to private donor targets.

· Market analysis: you will conduct market analysis within prioritized donor segments and develop prospect research and solicitation strategies.

· Engage leadership: you will support the leadership team (and board of directors) to plan and conduct fundraising activities, including identification, cultivation, and solicitation of individual donors within our existing network.

· Policies and procedures: You will support the development of required fundraising policies and procedures that reflect the organization's vision, mission, values, and ethical fundraising practices.

Qualifications:

· Minimum 7-10 years of experience in major donor or institutional fundraising.

· Strong network with foundations and high net-worth individuals preferred.

· Proven track record meeting ambitious sales or fundraising targets.

· Proven success in major donor cultivation, stewardship, and grant proposal writing.

· Experience writing proposals for public health and/or nutrition is an asset.

· Experience fundraising from institutional donors such as GAC, USAID, FCDO is an asset.

· Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. Knowledge of French (and/or other languages) is an asset.

· Familiarity with emerging trends, models, and platforms used by high value philanthropic donors (e.g., “Effective Altruism”; Donor Advised Funds, charity aggregators).

· Ability to supervise and direct department staff.

· Experience in successfully leading diverse cross-functional teams.

· Ability to work as part of a virtual team.

· Background in international development or public health is an asset.

· Advanced level skills with Microsoft Office Suite (specifically PowerPoint, Excel and Word).

· Knowledge of federal and provincial legislation regarding charities and adherence to the Canadian Centre for Philanthropy's Ethical Fundraising and Financial Accountability Code.

· Experience using Donor Management Systems.

· Flexible and open to varied work schedules (including some weekend and evening hours), and willing to travel internationally.
