In September 2022, Medicine Wheel Publishing opened a physical bookstore to further its purpose. The goal is to offer a space to all walks of life to learn about reconciliation, Indigenous cultural teachings and connect in a meaningful way.

Preference will be given to qualified Indigenous applicants. Any applicant must demonstrate knowledge of protocol and cultural teachings or have a strong willingness to learn.

This position is a combination position between the publishing arm of the company and the bookstore arm. This position will assist the publishing team in marketing, research and other publishing related administrative duties. The position will assist the bookstore rep/customer service/shipping as needed during busy sale periods or absences. At times, the applicant would be required to work a Saturday occasionally if the bookstore rep is unavailable.

Job Duties:

Publishing Administrative Assistant Job Duties

  • Assist in the development of marketing materials, campaigns, etc…including networking with contractors and the publisher to develop effective marketing materials and strategies.
  • Researching a variety of topics.
  • Providing support to authors and helping with author visits in the community.
  • Logistics management including helping with shipping pallets, reviewing inventory numbers, preparing reports, etc…
  • Administrative duties including performing day to day tasks such as booking conferences, travel arrangements, planning events, logistics, etc…
  • Offering proofreading of reprints, offering insights into books, etc…
  • Assisting with social media as required.
  • Accounts receivable.
  • Other job duties may be assigned from time to time.

Bookstore Job Duties

  • Offer customer services to bookstore customers including operating the POS system, taking orders over the phone, cleaning the bookstore if needed, answering bookstore emails, etc…
  • Recording inventory, placing the inventory in the inventory system, etc…
  • Assisting with social media for the bookstore.
  • Processing incoming orders (packaging and shipping). At times, it will require lifting boxes of books.
  • Troubleshooting sales issues.
  • Occasionally running sale booths.
  • Other duties may be assigned from time to time.

Must Have:

  • 3-4 years of higher education (diploma or university) and/or 3-5 years of relevant work experience. Any combination will be considered.
  • Excellent organization skills.
  • Strong multitasking abilities.
  • Excellent written and oral communication.
  • Ability to work well as a team and independently.
  • Be flexible and ability to excel in a fast-paced and changing environment.
  • Must be legally able to work in Canada.
  • An amazing positive attitude.

  • Eagerness to make a difference in the world and willingness to learn especially about cultural protocols.
  • Ability to work 30+ hours per week
  • Work effectively independently as well as with a team.

Assets to be Considered:

Higher Education

Any Sales and Customer Service experience

Any book publishing related experiences.

Knowledge of cultural Indigenous teachings, protocols and stories.

Qualified Indigenous candidates will be given preference for this position.

Job Type: Full time Employment. Three months on probationary period.
