As a member of the Nursing team you will be responsible for upholding the standards of practice for the Licensed Practical Nurse Association of Prince Edward Island and standards established by the Dr. John M. Gillis Memorial Lodge while providing direct and indirect care.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
A Graduate of an approved school for Registered Nurses.
Must currently be registered with ARNPEI.
Effective Communication skills in the English language, both verbal and written.
RN AS PRACTITIONER:
The RN provides health promotion, disease prevention, curative, supportive, rehabilitative and palliative services. The Nurse:
Has appropriate theoretical knowledge and skills related to needs and issues of those living in Long-Term Care
Will establish and maintain therapeutic relationships with all residents, family members, volunteers and care colleagues
Uses comprehensive assessment, critical inquiry, technology and research to provide competent nursing services relevant to gerontological nursing
Uses current theoretical knowledge and professional judgement, critical inquiry and reflection making decisions and implements actions relevant to the needs of the resident and family
Conducts/ensures a holistic needs assessment of each resident on an initial and ongoing basis (monthly and when health status changes)
Demonstrates respect for team members’ observations/opinions related to resident care
Develops, evaluates and regularly updates the plan of care for each residen.
Oversees and ensures the implementation of the plan of care
Provides direct nursing care (including screening, monitoring of chronic diseases, health maintenance, counseling, treatments, etc.) in keeping with scope of practice and the PEI Collaborative Model of Care
Is aware of and if possible participates in the development of Long Term Care standards
Ensures plan of care is based on Long Term Care standards
Monitors resident care to ensure standards are met
Invites, expects and accepts constructive feedback from residents and families regarding long-term care and services
Demonstrates accountability for practice using strategies such as providing rationale for decisions and actions, acknowledging errors, taking corrective action, recognizing own limitations ad consulting with others as necessary
RN AS AN ADVOCATE:
Long Term Care clients are vulnerable and therefore their rights may be at greater risk of violation. These residents need an advocate who will protect their right. The RN will:
Raise awareness of issues significant to the resident enabling them to make informed choices based on knowledge of the range of alternatives
Support the development and implementation of Person-Centered Care options that are acceptable, accessible, available and cost effective to the resident and family
Assures continuity in implementation of resident’s plan of care
Intervene on behalf of residents and families when necessary, ensuring their wishes and choices are articulated and honored
Promote advanced care planning ensuring resident’s wishes are met
RN AS AN EDUCATOR:
Nurses who work in LTC share their experiences with others. The nurse educator:
Creates a learning environment that supports professional development and life-long learning
Provides education to meet the individual learning needs of residents, families and volunteers within the Long-Term care sector
Provides continuing education within their area of expertise to nurses and other health care providers
Acts as a preceptor and mentor to both students and practitioners new to the field of Long-Term Care and/or new to The Lodge
RN AS A RESEARCHER:
The nurse utilizes and expands his/her Long-Term Care knowledge by:
Utilizing evidence-based practice process to make and evaluate best practice decisions
Seeking the expertise and guidance of others and considering resident preferences in selecting and implementing best practice
Participating in/reading nursing and interdisciplinary research related to gerontology and related fields
RN AS MEMBER OF PROFESSION:
Maintains an awareness of own values and ethical priorities and how they may impact on his/her own practice
Maintains Standards of Practice in keeping with Provincial and National Nursing Association directions, guidelines and Code of Ethics
Articulates and promotes the role of nursing in Long-Term Care within the nursing profession and to other health professional, encouraged to attain CNA certification in gerontology
Promotes and maintains effective interpersonal and inter-professional relationships by listening actively and communicating directly and assertively
Seeks to resolve conflict in a respectful manner
Participates in continuing education to meet identified learning needs relevant to Long-Term Care
COMPENSATION:
Gym on site for staff use only.
A free home cooked meal will be provided to you during your shift.
