First Nations University of Canada invites applicants for the positions of Research Assistants for the research project, “Studies of physical parameters of Indigenous artifacts; collecting and preserving the relating oral stories”. Within this two-year project, academics from FNUniv, University of Regina and Royal Saskatchewan Museum will collect Indigenous artifacts, study their physical parameters and collect and preserve oral stories. Pelican Narrows and Sturgeon Lake First Nations community members will participate in the project. The project is supported by Ministry of Canadian Heritage.

Duties and Qualifications:

Applicants have to be post-secondary students attending/affiliated from Canadian universities. Applicants originated with Pelican Narrows and Sturgeon Lake will be given preference.

Strong interpersonal skills are required. Strong proofreading, research and fact-checking skills with accuracy and attention to detail is necessary. The applicants have to be able to work with a voice-recorder and make meeting notes and working with MS Word is necessary. Familiarity with Indigenous meeting/ceremony ethics and demonstrated completion of coursework in archaeology or anthropology will be considered assets. As this position will have a fieldwork component, applicants should be willing to work outdoors in various weather conditions and terrain for extended periods of time.

Research Assistants will:

  • Be trained in working with and artifacts
  • Record oral histories from Indigenous community members
  • Travel to First Nations communities for interviewing community members, conducting fieldwork and site recording
