Our Sudbury Operations have been in existence for more than 100 years. With five mines, a mill, a smelter, a refinery and nearly 4,000 employees it is also one of the largest integrated mining complexes in the world. Sudbury is also home to several administrative sites serving both the Ontario Operations as well as all our North Atlantic Operations.
Port Colborne is home to our Nickel Refinery where raw materials from our Sudbury operations are processed into electrocobalt and precious metals and serves as a distribution centre for finished nickel products.
The Opportunity
We are currently seeking a Senior Specialist Engineer, Mining to join our Planning, Engineering, Technology & Development team in Sudbury, ON . This is a permanent position.
The Senior Specialist Engineer, Mining role is responsible for undertaking mine design & planning, trade-off studies, cost estimation, technical reviews, and project evaluations across several projects in multiple locations within the North Atlantic Operations. The projects may include Fast Track and underground mining projects at FEL 1 and FEL 2 study phases. The Sr specialist Mine Engineer is responsible to identify and implement improvement ideas of value engineering, while ensuring the projects are delivered within scope, cost and schedule while ensuring the safety and quality objectives agreed for the project are met. Additionally, in this position you will:
- Lead and actively promote behaviours aligned with Vale’s safety goals for all partners including employees, consultants, customers, and members of the community;
- Accountable for achieving zero harm by participating in the design of safe working systems, site inspections and safety interactions in their project area and ensuring all follow-up actions are carried out;
- Educate peers on the Engineering Standardization System (SPE) work;
- Collaborate with BM Technical Assurance, Quantitative Risk Analysis, and Maturity Assessment teams to present project breakthrough progress and to ensure study compliance with standard deliverables are achieved;
- Communicate and collaborate regularly with project team and consultants with respect to the outcomes of the mine work and to ensure that goals and priorities are clearly understood;
- Recommend to the Manager Underground Projects opportunities for project de-risking and cost optimization such as scheduling improvement, mine development innovations, safer mining techniques, etc.;
- Coordinate the use of and liaise with consultants where required for specialist work, input, or review of mine designs;
- Lead the mine design input for the project Technical Assurance Reviews, Quantitative Risk Assessments, Engineering Assessments and Maturity Assessments and ensures follow-up actions are completed;
- Lead the preparation of mine design & schedule optimization and ensures project value engineering opportunities are identified;
- Work with other members/subject areas of the Project Team and consultants to ensure no aspect of the project is overlooked or lags in progress and assists in the development and implementation of recovery plans;
- Lead mine studies and co-ordinate & monitor consultants within their responsible area to ensure project requirements are achieved;
- Work collaboratively with geology and geotechnical fields to ensure that the correct and up to date geological, structural, hydrogeological, geotechnical and resource models are used;
- Lead the preparation of Mining Scopes of Work and oversees Contract Management to ensure accurate work submission and approval of all Contract Changes;
- Evaluate existing and upcoming mining technologies for consideration/inclusion in project studies to improve safety, and productivity;
- Delivery of mine designs, mine plans, operating costs, capital costs and schedules for FEL 1 and FEL 2 studies;
- Ensure the business can make informed decisions by identifying, planning, and communicating mine strategies such as development, ramp up, extraction sequencing, critical path, bottleneck items;
- Ensure project documentation such as mine designs, production plans, technical reports, and study decisions are received, commented, responded to, and incorporated in project files;
- Mitigate deliverable delays by coordinating the different fields and establishing priorities;
- Ensure measurement of progress on all contracts for reporting progress to Manager of Underground Projects and broader team as required;
- Review and provide inputs to budgets, forecasts and resourcing plans for projects and studies;
- Assist in developing the risk register by identifying risks associated to your field for the project at each study level as well as ensuring appropriate controls are developed and carried out;
- Contribute to the establishment, development and continuous improvement of systems and practices to enable studies to be delivered optimally and efficiently;
- Prepare Scopes of Work for RFP;
- Act as peer reviewer on studies performed by consultants;
- Ensure Studies are completed on time, within budget and in accordance with standards.
About You
- Undergraduate degree is required
- P. Eng. designation is required
- PMP certification is preferred
- Over 15 years of experience in a similar subject area
- Unwavering commitment to safety
- Experience in delivering FEL 1/2/3 level studies
- Extensive experience in the study, design, development and/or operation of underground mines
- Must have proficiency in mine planning software packages, (i.e, Deswik)
- Strong understanding of mine dewatering, ventilation, geomechanics and mining infrastructure
- Knowledge of industry standards in mineral resource and mineral reserve estimation and compliance with public disclosure regulations
- Good communication and organization skills
- Ability to present detailed and complicated concepts and information succinctly
- Ability to evaluate alternative options and recommend preferred solution while outlining benefits and downside risks
- Ability to work with various groups and gain alignment
- Flexibility for domestic travel
