The Fire Prevention Officer is primarily responsible for the safe and efficient coordination, direction, planning and the delivery of selected programs, conducting fire inspections/fire investigations and the public fire safety education function within the Town of Coaldale and Lethbridge County. The FPO is an integral member of the emergency services team that works closely with the Town of Coaldale and the Lethbridge County administration to enhance all-aspects of public safety within our jurisdictions.


JOB DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Schedule and coordinate activities pertaining to fire inspections;
  • Conduct inspections of buildings, structures, and places in an assigned area to identify and locate fire hazards and ensure compliance with the Safety Codes Act, Alberta Fire Code, related bylaws, and the Quality Management Plans of the Town of Coaldale and Lethbridge County;
  • Provide input into plan examinations and development permits within Lethbridge County and the Town of Coaldale.
  • Conduct fire prevention presentations to enhance the fire and life safety public education program;
  • Respond to fire prevention inquiries and requests from the public;
  • Be an active member of the CDES which includes emergency response, training, meetings; which frequently occur outside of normal scheduled hours;
  • Support recruiting and training of fire department members;
  • Functions as an incident commander at emergency incidents; responsible for situation assessment, tactic and strategy development and implementation, and the deployment of personnel and equipment planning, organizing, coordinating, and directing the emergency and non-emergency activities of a fire suppression staff;
  • Participates in equipment and vehicle maintenance activities as required;

REQUIREMENTS Grade 12 Diploma or GED equivalence Group A – Basic Fire Safety Codes Officer Minimum Qualifications include: NFPA 1072 Hazmat Awareness & Operations, NFPA 1001 Firefighter 1 & 2, NFPA 1002 Driver, Pump, NFPA 1021 Level 1, NFPA 1041 Level 1, NFPA 1051 Level 1 , Blue Card Incident Commander, Standard First Aid & BLS, ICS 100, 200 Valid Class 5 Driver License with Q endorsement (air brakes) Desired Qualifications include: Alberta Fire Safety Codes Officer (B2, C2), NFPA 1021 Level 2, NFPA 1035, Medical First Responder certification or higher, Valid Class 2 or 3/4 Driver License COMPETENCIES Strategic Thinking Makes determinations regarding request for additional personnel, equipment, and resources; Monitor developments relevant to the fire service and develops recommendations to enhance the department’s overall effectiveness and performance; Participates in department planning, programming, and community outreach; Engagement Represents the department during meetings and public events; Works with the public to explain and resolve fire prevention issues; Respond and resolve citizen fire prevention related complaints and refers the public to an appropriate contact if required; Participates in the development and implementation of departmental policies, procedures and standards; Management Excellence Communicates and ensures understanding of the departments policies and procedures; Directs and performs a variety of support functions including performance feedback and assessment, training, and achieves compliance with safety policies and procedures; Manages information and records according to departmental records management policies; Values and Ethics Service delivery with integrity and respect; Demonstrates and promotes professionalism and integrates values and ethics in personal behaviour and Fire Department practices; CDES Values: Integrity, Respect, Professionalism, Compassion, Teamwork, Pride;
