Iron Bridge Fabrication Inc. is a metal fabrication company that specializes in Highway Bridge welded wide flange girders, tub girders, cable stayed bridges, truss bridges and Corten pedestrian bridges. Additionally, we excel at large custom metal fabrication and service customers in the Government, Industrial, and Agricultural sectors. We are now located in New Hamburg, Ontario (15 minutes west of Kitchener-Waterloo) in our new, purpose built, state of the art facility. We are looking for a bright, motivated team player to join us, and fill the role of Welder Apprentice.

Description of Roll

A Welder Apprentice is part of the production team. Involved in project discussions, communicating with the design department, and plant manager, to produce high quality steel fabrications. The Welder Apprentice will work with Welders who are provided shop drawings and project specific instructions from which to perform the required tasks including Flat, Horizontal, Vertical, and Overhead FCAW welding of steel structures and components. The Welder Apprentice works primarily under the direction of the Project Foreperson and the Plant Manager.

Responsibilities and Duties

As a Welder Apprentice your duties under the supervision of a Qualified Welder will include:

  • Reading and understanding fabrication shop drawings and Weld Symbols
  • Layout weld points and weld prefabricated components, sub-assemblies and complete structures within given tolerances and specifications.
  • Single and multi-pass fillet and flare bevel welds to a high-quality standard
  • Single and multi-pass partial penetration and complete joint penetration groove welds to a high-quality standard
  • Carbon arc gouging to sound metal for CJP grove welds
  • Continuously improve success rate when welds are subjected to UT, Mag Particle and Visual NDT inspection by third party inspectors
  • Learn and gain experience with Semi-Automatic welding equipment and techniques
  • Learn and gain experience with weld sequencing, mapping, pre-heat and post heat

Qualifications and Skills

The preferred candidate will have the following attributes:

  • A positive, can-do attitude with excellent communication skills, a willingness to learn and share new ideas
  • Organized, self-motivated, able to manage time efficiently
  • Progressing towards CWB certification in FCAW Flat

Preference will be given to candidates that:

  • Are CWB certified in FCAW, GMAW, SMAW
  • Currently enrolled in the Skilled Trades Ontario Welder Apprenticeship program
  • Experience in a similar roll
